The Viennese music group ensemble freymut has made a name for itself in the early music scene in recent years by successfully combining musical brilliance with a distinctive spirit of innovation. In its new concert series HORIZONS - Alte Musik INNOVATIV, the ensemble will present three of its current interdisciplinary projects at the Sargfabrik, brick-15 and TheaterArche in the first half of 2024.
2024-25 ensemble freymut is supported by the S-EEEMERING program. The funding program, which is partly financed by the EU, selected ten ensembles in the field of early music in 2024 and supports them in collaboration with over 20 cooperation partners in 13 EU countries. Since 2024, ensemble freymut has been a member of REMA, the largest early music network in Europe.
In the 2022|23 season, ensemble freymut was the featured ensemble of Jeunesse Austria. The ensemble performed 18 concerts in various formats across Austria. The ensemble also made its debut in January 2023 with its children's program “Freyen Muthes durch die Welt” as part of the “Resonanzen” festival at the Wiener Konzerthaus. In July 2021, ensemble freymut was awarded the WDR Prize at the International H.I.F. Biber Competition for its performance with singer Johanna Falkinger. The musicians accepted the invitation of Westdeutscher Rundfunk and were guests at the WDR3 Funkhauskonzert in February 2022 with their French program “Le Triomfe”.
In its current program “The Future of the Past - Hommage à Sara Levy”, ensemble freymut combines compositions from the 18th century with contemporary compositions by Daniel Serrano. “Dülon's World” takes the story of the legendary blind flautist Friedrich Ludwig Dülon (1769-1826) as the starting point for a musical and sensual journey through darkness, soundscapes and light. In the 2023 season, the ensemble took over the artistic direction of ViertelBarock, the OPEN AIR festival for baroque music in Vienna's Servitenviertel, and performed at the Telemann Center in Magdeburg. In September 2023, the ensemble celebrated its Asian debut with two concerts in Chuncheon, South Korea.
The musicians have received musical coaching and ensemble lessons from Stefan Gottfried, Johannes Weiss, Augusta Campagne and Wolfgang Glüxam, among others. In master classes with Barthold Kuijken, Christophe Coin and Claire Genewein, ensemble freymut continues to receive new impulses. The ensemble has received scholarships from the Werner Tripp Memorial Fund and the Gordon Murray Foundation and is a prizewinner of the International Berlin Bach Competition. The name freymut is both a message and a vision: writers of the 18th century often used this pseudonym to share their thoughts freely with the public. In this sense, it required “freyen Muth” (frank bravery) to publish a work with a critical message. In addition to writing literary texts and composing in new styles, it also takes courage to interpret music in a new way. This idea accompanies and inspires the musicians in their artistic activities.
